Being able to distinguish between facts, fiction and opinions is increasingly important in this digital age where anyone can post any comment irrespective of its accuracy or the reliability of the sources on which it was based.
These activities teach students to evaluate a text to determine if it is fact and if it is a fact, being able to justify why the information is factual versus being a personal opinion (reflecting a person’s beliefs, attitudes, values and biases) or or even just fiction. This is an important skill for all readers.
