The series of graded Rules Rule books was designed specifically for classroom use. The series gradually, but systematically introduces 40 rules. 10 new rules are introduced in each book and previously introduced rules are revised and covered at a higher level of complexity. There are four different activities associated with each rule.  Each activity is designed to help develop students’ understanding of the rule and the ability to apply that knowledge in different situations. The books are designed to be used with any spelling program. The general Rules Rule book provides an overview of all the rules and is more suitable for older students.

These books are also available in a photocopiable version licensed to the purchasing school or teacher and sold as a pdf.

The Rules Rules workbook rapidly up-skills students’ knowledge of the common spelling rules. It consists of 3 sections:

Rule Cards – There are 45 cards each containing one of the most common rules. On the reverse of each card is an example of the rule. The rules are repeated on an additional 45 cards with the key words missing. The missing words are written on the back of each card.

Nonsense Word Application– For each rule, there is a list of 20 nonsense words and 20 real words which require the application of the rule. The use of nonsense words ensures that students are actually applying the rule rather than relying on prior knowledge of how a particular word is spelled.

Real Word Application – For each spelling rule, there is a page of exercises, using real words.

Spelling Rules Posters

Spelling Rules Posters B&W   Spelling Rules Posters Coloured

The 40 Rules Posters are available as downloadable pdfs in either colour or black and white. Each rule is illustrated with pictures and examples and includes exceptions.  The underlying idea is for the posters to be displayed around the classroom as each rule is introduced.  Then when students make spelling errors in their written work the teacher can circle the error and write the rule number which corresponds to the error.  For example, if the student writes ‘kame’ the teacher can circle the ‘k’ and write ‘5’.  The student can then refer to Rule 5 to help them correct the error. Click on image to purchase.
