The following amazing short story was written by 11 year old Josh (with diagnosed dyslexia) after completing a 6 week Writing Creatively program. We brainstormed the story, but Josh then typed the story completely unassisted. The only editing to the story below was the inclusion of some commas.
The Flood
Joyfully trotting out of his house, Jimmy started to feel thick drops of rain thumping on his hat. Jimmy’s clothes were starting to get soaked, so he quickly rushed back to his house. “The rain should stop in a little while,” thought Jimmy. Unfortunately, the rain was still hammering on the roof by the time Jimmy was trying to get to bed. It was a long night. The rain sounded like an elephant stomping on the roof as Jimmy tossed and turned covering his ears with a pillow.
Drowsily, Jimmy waddled over to the fridge to have some breakfast, but there was no food. “I’ll have to go out and get some more,” yawned Jimmy. All of a sudden, Jimmy remembered it was still raining, but he didn’t want to give up. When Jimmy sprinted outside, he saw the track from his house to the garden completely flooded and as he stepped near it, his feet were immediately submerged in mud. It was impossible to get through, so he quickly jogged back to his house.
The dreaded rain was still pouring down after three days. Jimmy was very bored. There was nothing left to play and the power was out, so he couldn’t contact anyone. He had already tried to bounce a ball, run around and even go outside, but he could not do any thing else. Jimmy was on the ground crying his eyes out because he did not know what to do. “When will this horr…id rain sstop?” whimpered Jimmy.
Suddenly, the roof started to leak. When will the rain ever stop and will it ever stop? Frantically, Jimmy was running around and patching up his roof. It was leaking everywhere. Jimmy didn’t know how much longer he could last.
Ten day later, Jimmy was lying on the ground. “Oh no! I have left the sprinkler on,” said the lady back from her holiday. Jimmy the mouse suddenly jumped up and ran outside. He was so happy the sprinkler was turned off. The man-made rain had finely stopped.
