Sample of the Letter Recognition section: Multisensory Reading Program Level 1

This exercise is designed to reinforce students’ instant letter recognition and also to recognize the different ways each letter of the alphabet may be represented in text.

Students are required to circle all the different ways of writing the letter. Each time a letter is circled, the student should say the sound represented by that letter and the key word/picture associated with that letter sound. For example, every time the letter ‘a’ is circled, the student would say, “/a/ for apple”.

An extension of this activity would be to have the student find other letters that have previously been learned. For example: “Put a triangle around a /d/ for dog. Put a square around a /n/ for nut. Put a line above /t/ for tent.”

Travelling around Australia and doing school by correspondence, my son found spelling and reading difficult plus was not understanding any of the sounds that were introduced.  I consider myself a good speller but I was unable to explain the specifics. The Cracking the ABC Code programs have helped me understand the principles of English and relay this information confidently to my child.  We have completed the Multisensory Reading Level 1 and are currently working through the Multisensory Spelling Books 1-5 of the 300 common words plus the Multisensory Reading Level 2A.  Jamie enjoys the activities and benefits from the continual reinforcement.  From a parent’s perspective the programs are easy to understand and it is great to see Jamie’s confidence with reading and spelling increasing.   This programme dissects the English language in an uncomplicated and enjoyable manner.  I recommend the ABC Cracking the Code programs for all home tutors to compliment their child’s school work.  Melissa (Mother) –WA.
